According to a 2013 report by the Seattle Jobs Initiative (SJI), over 75% of employers believed soft skills were just as important as, if not more important than, technical knowledge.

Soft skills are essential for career development and helping students find and retain jobs after graduation. As an instructor, how do you know which soft skills to encourage in your students and how do you begin to help students develop these skills?

Which skills should you focus on?

  • Communication: the ability to convey thoughts calmly and clearly in all settings
  • Teamwork: the ability to work well with others
  • Time Management: the ability to plan ahead, work efficiently, and stay organized
  • Problem-solving: the ability to troubleshoot, adapt to changes, and make important decisions

How do you teach them?

Instructors should be sure to reinforce soft skills and give positive feedback when students exhibit positive traits like working well in groups or speaking and writing clearly.

The CDX Employment Readiness Course actively teaches these skills, in addition to others that are relevant to the needs of automotive technicians, such as working with the correct tools and technology.
