What should your technician training program look like?

As you develop an appropriate technician training program for your workspace, there are many resources to consider, and many directions to go. If you are deciding what your automotive technician training or technical training program should look like, we are here to help you define an ideal structure and format— and find resources that fit.

Our Auto Industry Training Series is designed to offer insight and guidance on crafting a technician training program, depending on the needs of your workspace and your preferred training styles. Read on and hopefully you can feel more informed when choosing the right resources and priorities for your program.

What Should the Pacing of My Technician Training Look Like?

Gradual Paced Training

A more gradual paced training starts with lectures, demonstrations and/or hands-on learning for each lesson, and then the trainee works with a mentor or trainer to reinforce the skills in the shop. Once a skill is mastered, the trainee then moves forward to learn the next lesson or category of training.

Auto Technician and Trainer Mickey Szerlag prefers this type of pace in training programs, stating that, “The best programs are spread out.” You may find that gradually pacing your auto mechanic training helps key concepts and principles stick while technicians work on mastering them one by one.

Accelerated Paced Training

Fast-tracked technician training might be a good fit for your program if you are looking to get technicians certified and qualified within limited amounts of time. Accelerated programs often let trainees gain training and experience simultaneously in a shop setting, working to demonstrate specific proficiencies needed to qualify them for certain technician positions and particular auto mechanic certifications.

Technicians needing more flexible training may gravitate more to an accelerated training program if it allows them to complete it around their work schedule or in a shorter, condensed period of time.
